Eau de Vie in Sydney – there is also one in Melbourne now, but Sydney was first of course ? – has won so many awards from Sydney Time Out, Australian Gourmet Traveller etc over the years that I am unsure where to start. It even won Best New Cocktail Bar in the World when it opened in 2010, at the Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards, the industry’s biggest and most influential awards worldwide, beating bars in New York and London. So, yes, my expectations were high. Finding the bar is part of the fun – it is hidden discretely at the back of The Kirketon Hotel – go though the door marked toilets! It is dimly lit, open every day, offers table service and serves food. I have not tried the food yet, as for me (like most) Eau de Vie is all about the cocktails. Their cocktail menu is not surprisingly extensive, as well as experimental. These days, they even offer Cocktail Catering for private events, from 10-500 guests. Oh, and they take reservations between 6pm and 8pm only, which is highly recommended, especially on weekends.
